Life is so progressive that being held captive by the past will be a mere waste of valuable time. There is no gain in living or dwelling in your past mistakes. It is a mere waste of the time that would have been engaged productively. Don’t let your past mistakes determine your present state neither should you allow it define your future. Your past life is not expected to define you. Over the years, I have come to the discovery that one of the thing that has kept many under bondage is their past life. Holding unto a thing prevents another from coming in. Holding unto the past hinders the expression of the new both in the present and future. Holding unto the past for so long places a limitation on the present and prevents the manifestation of the future.
It is impossible to pass through this world without a past life. These past life can either be good or it can be bad. Across the globe, I have read and come across people who finds it difficult to forgive themselves because of the way their past life was. They find it difficult to disengage and let go of their wrong past engagements. They have considered it enormous and hence allowed it to imprison and incapacitate them. Like Rick Warren rightly noted in his book “We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it”. As humans, we have our flaws, we have our weakness, we have our shortcoming. We just have to understand that the environment we find ourselves is not perfect. It is filled with many events and happenings targeted at derailing us and making us to err. Some of this events influences us negatively either consciously or unconsciously hence introducing imperfection in us.
Phases of life
There are three phases in life; the past, the present and the future. The past lies behind us and it is a maker of experience, the present is now and it is action driven and the future is the anticipated. Amongst the three, it is our past that occasionally hunts us. It is our past that poses the greatest challenges in the maximization of the present and the actualization of the future. No one will successfully live life without having a past which may be good or may be bad. Whether it was good or bad, it is main to serve as an experience and as a lesson. It doesn’t always matter how disastrous our past was, we can always make something good out of it if we don’t allow it to define us. Like Sarah Dessen rightly said “Your past is always your past. Even if you forget it, it remembers you.” You don’t need to focus so much on the past because you can’t change it. However, something can be done about it. The present can be maximized in order to get a glorious future.
The past as a tool
Confucius said, “Study the past if you would define the future.”. In other words, the past is an essential tool to navigate the future successfully. It is a precursor for the emergence of the future. We sometimes have to look back in order to move forward. “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” ― Søren Kierkegaard. Whichever way it fall, we are not to be held down by the past but to device what can be made of the past. The past is not meant to be dwelt on but to be meant for proper alignment for the present and future. The past is expected to serve as a guide, a navigator and an experience. The numerous mistakes experienced in the present is the inability to learn from the past experience. History is bound to be repeated when it has not been learnt from. Dwelling so much on the past is a waste of the present and a limitation of the future.
The past doesn’t define you
“We don’t have to be defined by the things we did or didn’t do in our past. Some people allow themselves to be controlled by regret. Maybe it’s a regret, maybe it’s not. It’s merely something that happened. Get over it.” ― Pittacus Lore
God has not consulted your past to determine your future. No matter how worse or negative your past life might be, it does not cancel the possibility of positive future especially when God is involved. Our life is not defined by our past except we allow it. It is what we give permission to in our life that materializes. It is what we give life to that comes alive. Your past life may not be encouraging. Your past life may be deadly. Your past life may have been destructive. Your past life may not have been beneficial but it must not be allowed to define us. No matter how terrible your past was, there is still much possibility of a glorious future. Your continuous dwelling on the past changes nothing but rather stagnates you.
Let it go
You just have to let it go in order for you to go. Certain things has to be dropped if you must go into career. Certain things has to go if you must go into destiny. Certain things has to go if you must go into fulfillment. Certain things has to be dropped, certain things has to be released if the best must come our way. Why dwell on your past life when its changes nothing. Why dwell on your past life when it’s yielding no fruit. Why dwell on your past life when it is limiting you. No matter how unpleasant the past might have been, you just have to let go of it. If not for any other reason but because you have to make progress with your life. Just as Dan Brown said “Sooner or later we’ve all got to let go of our past.” It is noteworthy that you have got nothing to lose by letting it go. You have got nothing to lose by putting it aside. However, you have got all to gain both in the present and in the future.
